The heat has been outrageous lately here in SoCal! Even along the coast where I live. We don’t have air conditioning over here on the westside, it is rarely this hot so it is not a necessity. These last few weeks however…were quite uncomfortable. It may have only lasted a few weeks but I swear, it felt like it was hot all summer! I guess my mind is still traumatized by all of the Texas summers I have endured.
Needless to say I have not wanted to do any cooking. Not even outside on the grill. I wanted nothing to do with anything requiring a heat source. But…I had some dry aged ribeye that needed to be cooked and a special friend I wanted to cook for. So, I fired up the grill (outside was a little cooler than inside) and began my dance with the simple but unique menu I had brewing.
Earlier in the day I was talking with a co worker about the steaks I had and how usually I would do some sort of potato side, (I’m a steak and potato girl) but I didn’t want anything heavy like that. I wanted something light and refreshing to accompany the steaks. He immediately said -fruit! I turned up my nose a little at that. Steak…and fruit?! But then it started to grow on me. Yeah. Steak and fruit!
Fruit is at the peak of its season right now! Everything smells so good and is ripe and sweet! Since I am a Texas girl and we eat a lot of watermelon in the summer that’s the fruit I chose. Steak and watermelon was beginning to sound perfect! My creative culinary mind had a jump start and I was immediately inspired! The menu was coming to life…
